Haulover Sandbar by Private Yacht

The Haulover sandbar sits in the Intracoastal just inside Haulover Inlet, between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach: a shallow flat where boats raft up to swim. There is no land access; you anchor there by boat. Feeling Yachty’s yachts leave from the marinas minutes away, from about $825 for two hours with captain, crew and fuel included.

Where the Haulover sandbar is

Inside the bay just south-west of Haulover Inlet, in the stretch of Intracoastal between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles. The water runs knee- to waist-deep over hard sand at low tide: shallow enough to stand, deep enough to float a raft-up of boats every weekend. Which docks sit closest is on Miami yacht departure areas, and the other anchorages the fleet runs to are on Miami yacht destinations.

How to get to the sandbar

By boat only; there is no walkway, bridge or beach entrance. The practical route is a crewed charter out of the Haulover-side marinas, five to ten minutes from dock to anchor. Swimming out from shore crosses an active channel and is not a plan.

The sandbar day

Anchor, music on, water mat out, coolers open. Weekends are the floating block party; weekdays are families and calm water. Add a jet ski ride from the boat, priced by the hour below, or build the whole thing into a Miami booze cruise that ends with the South Beach lap.

What it costs

From about $825 for two hours on the smallest yachts, enough for a swim stop, and about $850 to $1,150 for the three-to-four-hour sandbar afternoon most groups book. Captain, crew and fuel included; the boats above leave from the closest docks, and the ride itself is on jet ski rentals in Miami.

Questions

Haulover sandbar questions

Can you walk to the Haulover sandbar?
No. It is surrounded by water and reached only by boat.
Is the sandbar free?
The water is public and anchoring costs nothing. The boat is the cost.
How deep is it?
Roughly knee- to waist-deep on the flat at low tide, deeper at the edges: kids stand, coolers float.
When is it busiest?
Weekend afternoons, peaking Sundays. For space and glassy water, go on a weekday morning.
Haulover or Nixon sandbar?
Haulover is the north-bay party raft-up minutes from Bal Harbour; Nixon, off Key Biscayne, is the quieter south-bay flat. Both are Miami sandbars the fleet anchors at.
Is this the same as Haulover Beach?
No. Haulover Beach is the oceanside park across the inlet. The sandbar is the boat anchorage inside the bay.
